Let’s start the tour from a local food market, where you will be able to enjoy some Korean street food, located in the heart of Seoul. Up until the late 1800s, Korean markets operated as temporary markets, which means they only opened for a few days at a time. Gwangjang Market came to be the first permanently established market that was open every day in 1905. It was built to reclaim Korean sovereignty during the period of Japanese occupation. Today, it continues to prosper as a popular tourist spot and is famous for its street food.
Then we will go to the fashion district, where you will be able to see an incredibly modern building – DDP. Dongdaemun Design Plaza has been the main attraction in Seoul since 2014. Only 5 years old, this building was designed by the famous architect Zaha Hadid. It showcases a brand new design with its curvaceous structure and its also very attractive silvery façade. Standing in the middle of the city, it almost gives spaceship vibes. The structure is comprised of multiple undulating levels of galleries, exhibition halls, design shops, as well as an event hall.
For the last stop of this tour, we will walk along the Seoul Fortress Wall. This fortress wall was previously called Hansung during the Joseon Dynasty. In 1395, just five years after King Taejo founded the Joseon Dynasty, King Taejo established a government office to build a castle to defend Seoul. He ordered Jeong Do-jeon to search for and measure a site. In 1396, Taejo of Joseon held the groundbreaking ceremony. 200,000 young men were placed under requisition over two years and completed building the castle 98 days after the war. The wall contained eight gates, all of which were originally constructed from 1396 to 1398. This last spot will allow you to enjoy the city lights and the amazing view.
