A star map. A gate. An alphabet. A flag. Four things that look unrelated until you know what made them — one idea about how the universe is ordered, carried through six hundred years and still flying over the city today.

One code  ·  four faces

Korean Code is a 3-hour English history walking tour in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, tracing one cosmological code from a Joseon star map to Gyeongbokgung Palace, the Hangul alphabet, and the Korean flag.

It is not a highlights tour. Over three hours we follow a single idea through four objects, rather than walking you past forty. You will leave able to read things you have already walked past, which is a different souvenir than a photograph.

What you decode

Four objects, one idea

Each stop is a different form of the same thinking. The order matters: sky, then ground, then speech, then a country.

The star map

National Palace Museum

A chart of 1,467 stars, cut into stone in 1395. Read it as astronomy and it is impressive. Read it as an argument and it becomes the founding document of a dynasty that had just seized power and needed the sky to agree.

The gate

Gwanghwamun

Four gates were built around the old capital, and they answer to the four guardian constellations on that map. The city was laid out as a copy of the sky, including the gate you are standing under.

The alphabet

The Story of King Sejong

Twenty-eight letters, the same count as the lunar mansions overhead. The consonants are drawings of the mouth making them; the vowels are heaven, earth, and a person standing between the two.

The flag

Gwanghwamun Square

Most national flags say who a country is. This one says how the universe works. It is the last stop because by then you can read it yourself, without the guide telling you what it means.

The route

Three hours, 500 metres

Everything sits within a short walk of Gwanghwamun Square, and two stops are indoors, so the tour runs in most weather and the walking stays light.

Gwanghwamun Square

The question every civilisation asked — is the universe chaos, or order? — and the answer Joseon carved into everything it built.

The star map

Cheonsangyeolchabunyajido. 1,467 stars, brightness carved as size, a sky inherited from Goguryeo, and a new king’s claim that heaven had changed its mind.

Fire, the south, the vermilion bird. How the five phases work as verbs rather than substances, and why the palace sits exactly where it sits.

Twenty-eight letters built from the same code, and the moment you notice that a Korean syllable is assembled the way the cosmos was thought to be.

Yin and yang as a single motion, the trigrams around it, and the line running from a 1395 star map to the flag over the building behind you.

We end where we started, with one last thing to decode, and it turns out you have been looking at it since you arrived.

Before you book

Is this tour for you?

We would rather you read this and choose a different tour than spend three hours wishing you had.

Book it if

  • You have already seen Seoul’s palaces and want to understand what you were looking at
  • You would rather go deep on one idea than tick off a list of sights
  • You enjoy history, philosophy, design or language, and you like asking questions
  • Three hours of walking and listening sounds like a good afternoon

Skip it if

  • You want to go inside Gyeongbokgung. We view the palace from outside — no ticket is needed, and we do not enter
  • It is your first day in Seoul and you mainly want photographs at the palace
  • You are travelling with young children — the material is written for adults
  • You want to cover as many sights as possible in one morning

Questions

Everything guests ask first

Is this a private tour or a shared one?

It is an open small group of up to 10 guests, so you may be joined by other travellers. Booking for one person is fine. A private version of the same route is available as a separate tour, and Korean-language guiding is offered on that version.

How long is the tour?

About 3 hours, including walking time between the four stops.

Where does the tour start?

At Gwanghwamun Square in central Seoul. Your guide will send the exact meeting spot and a photo of the landmark after you book.

How much does it cost and how do I pay?

The tour is USD 50 per person. A 20% deposit (USD 10) confirms your booking online, and the remaining USD 40 is paid in cash on the day. US dollars are preferred; Korean won is also accepted.

How far ahead do I need to book?

Booking closes one day before the tour date. Groups are capped at 10 guests, so popular dates can fill earlier than that.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancel 14 or more days before the tour for a 100% refund. Between 24 hours and 14 days before, you receive an 80% refund. Within 24 hours, please see the full cancellation policy on this page.

Do I need a ticket to Gyeongbokgung Palace?

No. This tour views Gyeongbokgung from outside and visits free venues, so no palace admission ticket is required.

How far will we walk?

All four stops sit within about a 500-metre radius of Gwanghwamun Square, and two of them are indoors, so the walking is light and the tour runs in most weather.

Which days does the tour run?

Korean Code runs Tuesday through Sunday. The tour does not operate on Mondays, when The Story of King Sejong exhibition hall is closed.

Is this tour right for a first visit to Seoul?

It can be, but it is not a highlights tour. Korean Code goes deep on one idea rather than covering many sights, and it does not enter Gyeongbokgung Palace. If this is your first day in Seoul and you mainly want photographs inside the palace, a general palace tour will suit you better.

This mark means nothing to you right now.

By the end of the walk it will, and so will half of what you passed on the way here.
